Shine On! NitroPlate Can Convert that Rust to Something Shiny

Springtime means getting the car out of storage but it also means having to endure the annual ritual of repainting those corroded headers for another season of cruising. NitroPlate is a Specialty Coatings company that offers ceramic coatings for headers to make that corroded look a thing of the past. We recently pulled a set of fuzzy brown headers off an early Chevelle. The original plan was to install the modified tubes to ensure they fit the chassis properly before we had them coated. That was a temporary fix that had become permanent. That was roughly 10 years ago and the headers have been subjected to thousands of heat cycles that completely transformed the exterior for the header tubing to rust brown. It was time to step up.

If you’re considering having a set of headers coated, there are more advantages to ceramic coating than just a polished appearance. We’ve been running ceramic-coated headers on performance engines for years and not only does the coating look good, but it also does a great job of holding the heat in the tubes. This offers several advantages. You can actually measure this with an infrared heat gun. Just check the skin temperature of a non-coated header versus a NitroPlate coated header and you can see a measurable difference. NitroPlate’s own testing revealed a 200 degree F difference in peak surface temperature, measured roughly three inches from the cylinder head flange. A very practical advantage to this cooler surface temperature is that NitroPlated headers cool off much quicker than a non-coated header, which means you can work on the engine much sooner without frying your skin.

These cooler running headers also reduce under-hood temperatures. This may not seem like a big deal, but even older cars on a hot day experience under-hood temperatures in excess of 150 degrees. Here’s a tip, the coating will help reduce the under-hood temperatures even though you still have hot air exiting the radiator. But even a slight underhood reduction by 25 degrees could be advantageous. An OE field study found that reducing inlet air temperature by 25 degrees will reduce octane requirements by one full point. That’s significant.

So with all these advantages in our favor, we yanked the headers out of our ’65 Chevelle and shot some photos before sending them off to NitroPlate for their rejuvenation. The process involves first being thermally degreased which is less abrasive on the parts than a chemical degrees, then they head off for surface preparation removing  all corrosion and contaminates from the existing headers. From there the coating is applied and into the ovens they go to be fully cured, this is a large advantage as we will not have to worry about break-in procedures when we get them back.  If new headers are in the works, you might consider installing them first like we did to check fitment in case there may be some modifications required before you have them coated. This way, you know they will be right after the coating process.

NitroPlate’s own testing revealed a 200 degree F difference in peak surface temperature, measured roughly three inches from the cylinder head flange. 

As for colors, you have several choices. We chose the classic NitroPlate Bright, but there’s also a High Temp Matte Black (Stainless Steel Only), Satin and Gray Cast Iron that will give a stock manifold that OE look. Some of these coatings are better applied to intake manifolds or other parts as opposed to headers. Give NitroPlate a call if you have any questions.

Once our headers returned, we knew we were in for something special even as we pulled the headers out of the box. They were professionally packaged in several layers of protective bubble wrap and foam coatings that kept our headers from banging around inside the box. Once they were out, the transformation was amazing. Our once-rusty headers looked near new. Sure, they had some surface dimpling that was the result of previous surface rust, but otherwise, the treatment was a tremendous improvement.

We combined our coated headers with new gaskets and a set of stainless ARP bolts for both the flanges and the three-bolt collectors. Don’t use stainless nuts with stainless collector bolts as stainless-on-stainless will the easily gall the threads. Instead, use a set of plated regular steel nuts with a heavy coating of anti-seize on the threads. This will keep the threads from rusting and make removal a bunch easier. Also note that you shouldn’t break-in a new flat tappet cam with a virgin pair of coated headers. Running the engine for 20 minutes without being tuned 100% “Timing &Jetting” plus not having the  benefit of additional cooling air from a moving vehicle could discolor the coating from excessive heat. If you must break in a new flat tappet cam with new coated headers, keep the run time to about five minutes and then allow the headers to cool completely before running the engine again. This procedure will prevent excessive heat buildup in the headers. Otherwise, bolt on your shiny new headers and then look for any excuse to open the hood so your friends can see your nice new Nitroplate enhanced headers.

Bolted on the small-block that is going back into our Chevelle, we now have a set of headers we can be proud of instead of making excuses for rusty metal. Life is good!

Not All Coatings are Created Equal: Powder vs. Ceramic Coatings

In the world of coatings, things that may sound similar – are in fact very different. Such is the case with Powder Coating and Ceramic Coating. To officially explain the difference, we brought in someone well versed in coatings of all kind, Cody Jones, Sales and Marketing Manager for NitroPlate in Nashville, TN.

“There is terrible confusion in the industry as to the difference between Powder coating and Ceramic coating,” said Jones. “Simply stated, powder coating services offer a harder-than-paint coating that is available in a wide variety of colors. In contrast, ceramic coating is far more resistant to chipping, corrosion and extreme heat environments.”

“Offered in only a few colors and sheens, ceramic coating is far more durable than its often-confused coating cousin,” continued Jones. “In order to meet Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) coating anti-chip requirements, the surface must withstand a pebble shot at the coated surface at 95 mph from a distance of 32 inches away – NitroPlate exceeds that standard for OEM level ceramic coatings.”

Powder coating can be applied to used parts after they have been degreased and then chemically cleaned to provide a proper surface for the electrostatically paint coating to be applied. The part is then placed in an oven for 2-4 hours to complete the process. Typical cure temperature on Powder Coating is 350-425 degrees

Ceramic coating, such as the process offered by NitroPlate, comes in two applications; Dip-Spin and traditional wet spray application. Dip-Spin is most often used with large quantities of small to medium size parts. The parts are surface prepped and placed in a bin with perforated sides and bottom. The bin is then dipped in another larger bin containing the liquid ceramic coating, lifted out of the larger bin and spun to sling excess coating off the parts. This lowers waste of coating and allows large quantities of parts to be evenly coated at a single time. Once this process is done, the parts are run through a very large oven to fully cure them.

The more traditional “wet spray” ceramic coating process is used on larger parts, most commonly components like headers, mufflers and exhaust tubing. However ceramic coating is also great for oil pans, timing covers, water pump housing, hood hinges, braces or brackets and really anything that you can think of. The only requirement is that the part be able to withstand 750 degrees for 3-5 hours. After Surface Preparation, the coating is sprayed on the part and then placed in a large oven for curing– the same style oven as the Dip-Spin process.

With exhaust parts, some customers need extra surface protection. NitroPlate’s special aluminum-based ceramic coating provides a thermal/corrosion barrier that reduces the heat that emanates from exhaust parts during engine operation. That results in lower under hood temperatures and longer engine life. From a corrosion barrier standpoint, NitroPlate coatings will protect your parts from environmental elements and inhibit corrosion and rust. Nitroplate Checks In After Great 2014 Cruisin’ The Coast

I can’t get enough of Cruisin’ the Coast! It is considered America’s largest block party and began in 1996 as a festival to celebrate antique, classic and hot rod vehicles, and nostalgic music and related events along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Since that time it has grown to become the largest special event in the state of Mississippi with over 7,000 enthusiast participants, plus dozens of host car clubs and vendors from across the country and abroad.

This event is one of my favorites of the year to go to, with every motor-head with in a thousand miles attending. The crowd was so intense all three days of the show there was no downtime in the booth. One of my favorite things to do is to educate the customer on what ceramic coating can do for them, from corrosion barrier protection, to increased performance.

NitroPlate even had multiple customers take their cars back to the trailer just to pull the exhaust components off so I could bring them back to the plant for coating. This event brings both a young audience just getting into it, as well as an older retired crowd who have been building cars all their lives. Everyone is a car enthusiast and just excited to be there. Nitroplate’s Kevin Cradduck to Pilot Record Holding Rat Trap LSR 7551 at Bonneville Speed Week

Nashville, TN…July 30, 2014 – Nitroplate is pleased to announce Kevin Cradduck will be piloting the Rat Trap LSR 7551 A/Fuel Modified Rear Engine Roadster owned by Brian Hope at Bonneville Speed Week on August 8-14. The racecar is the current record holder at 216 MPH set in 2012 when driven by Brian’s 18 year-old daughter, Victoria Hope. She is the youngest person to go 200 MPH in the history of Bonneville.

Most notably, the Hope Family is known for the Rat Trap Fuel Altered, which Brian, his father Ron Hope and their crew campaign internationally. Since its initial construction in 1968 and initial debut in 1969, no other Fuel Altered has been as highly publicized as the Rat Trap, which is now celebrating over 40 years of drag racing excitement.
